The Agrarian Kitchen is located in a 19th century schoolhouse at Lachlan, 45 minutes from Hobart in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley.

Lachlan Valley has always been a rich agricultural area, where smaller growers grew a variety of crops, including a few acres of hops, berry fruits, orchards and some milking cows. Growing and harvesting was a significant part of the community life with school holidays arranged around hop-picking time so the children could help with the harvest.

The schoolhouse is a weatherboard structure built circa 1887, in the style of many one -teacher schools that serviced the rural communities of Tasmania. It is nestled on the valley floor and surrounded by rambling English style gardens with many deciduous trees planted by the school children on Federation day, over 100 years ago.
